Dyfi River Biodiversity

The range of protected areas on our river reflect the importance it plays in the ecosystems of the Dyfi Valley with the river rising in the small lake Creiglyn Dyfi at about 1,900 feet (580 m) above sea level, below Aran Fawddwy and flowing south to Dinas Mawddwy and Glantwymyn (Cemmaes Road) then south west past Machynlleth to Cardigan Bay.

Our members and supporting organisations have helped take part in frequent monitoring of the river. The Fishery carries out regular invertebrate assessment and our land-owners have also supported bird surveys which show our area to be the most diverse of all sites surveyed in the Cambrian Mountains.

The tree-lined banks of alder and sessile oaks support wildlife but also provide refuge for species in the river itself with sources of food and shade.
